Abstract

The International Convention on Standards of Instruction, Certification and Watching for Seafarers (STCW) commits its signatory States to organize watchkeeping on ships classified for open sea, in order to prevent labor fatigue and preserve the rest of seafarers who are involved in functions related to safety, pollution prevention and vessel protection attributions. This article aims to investigate the occurrence of labor fatigue in Brazilian merchant officers, on board merchant vessels. The method of deductive approach was used, using documentary and bibliographic surveys, in addition to semi-structured interviews, through the “Google Forms” platform, aiming to investigate the current panorama of the rest of the Brazilian merchant officer, who works or worked in Brazil. The work was divided into three sections, in addition to the introduction and conclusion, dealing, respectively, with the phenomenon of contemporary work fatigue, the causes and impacts of work fatigue at sea and the results obtained through the applied questionnaire, which indicated that 54% of the participants reported not having adequate rest on board, 61% usually sleep six hours or less and most of them reported the infrequent incidence of fatigue symptoms, among other data that indicate the need for measures to protect the rest rights of Brazilian officers.
