The paper aims to present the safe and healthy work environment as a new principle and fundamental right at work adopted by the International Labor Organization. It lays emphasis on the cogent force that binds States to fundamental conventions even when not ratified. It also analyzes the connection of the new principle and fundamental right to the decent work agenda and the centrality in protecting the dignity of seafarer, from the point of view of their health, and their impact on the shipping industry.
