Abstract

: This article seeks to analyze the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which establishes minimum standards for the construction and operation of ships, with the aim of demonstrating how the prescriptions concerning onboard navigation systems and equipment have been incorporated throughout its existence and examining their influence on maritime safety. Considering the five versions published between 1914 and 1974, along with subsequent amendments, several adjustments can be identified in each edition, reflecting the historical context and technological innovations of each period. In this regard, this study investigated the historical changes of the Convention, with an emphasis on the chapter dedicated to navigational safety, highlighting its relevant reforms and addressing the onboard navigation equipment and systems implemented along this path, highlighting their importance for ensuring safety at sea. Through deductive and qualitative methods, supported by bibliographical and documentary research, it is emphasized that the successive revisions of the Convention have significantly contributed to strengthening maritime safety.
